The unit invests in environmental controls, development of new technologies, support for conservation areas and research. The purpose is to contribute to the adequate use of natural resources, aiming to meet current demands and keep the conditions of quality of life for future generations.
Biodiversity conservation is one of the key topics of ArcelorMittal Tubarão’s environmental management
Green Belt
Occupying more than seven thousand m2 around the plant, the area has about 2.6 million trees and shrubs and eight different Permanent Preservation Areas, with lagoons, swamps, mangroves and beaches. The Green Belt is monitored by specialists who measure, evaluate and protect life in this area. It also controls atmospheric emissions, as it reduces wind speed, preventing the dragging of materials out of the unit. In partnership with Instituto Capixaba de Pesquisa, Assistência Técnica e Extensão Rural (Incaper), ArcelorMittal Tubarão develops researches to improve and enhance the Green Belt’s flora and fauna diversity.
Environmental Conservation Units
ArcelorMittal Tubarão provides financial support to the implementation of improvements in ten conservation units, including natural parks, lagoons and environmental preservation areas located in the Great Vitória area. The use of resources is monitored by a commission coordinated by the State Environmental Institute (Iema) with the participation of representatives of the benefited municipalities. The units are located in the cities of Vitória (Lameirão Island Municipal Ecological Station, Fonte Grande State Park, Mulembá Valley Municipal Natural Park – Conquista, Gruta da Onça Municipal Natural Park and Pedra dos Olhos Municipal Park); Serra (Environmental Protection Areas of Jacuném Lagoon, Morro do Vilante, Praia Mole and Mestre Álvaro); and Vila Velha (Jacarenema Municipal Natural Park).
Tamar Project
Since 2001, through a technical cooperation agreement signed between ArcelorMittal Tubarão and Tamar Project Foundation, experts conduct research and periodic marine monitoring of green turtles (Chelonia mydas) at the company's final effluent. The animals are captured for studies on biometry and growth, migratory patterns, haematological profile and health condition. The more than two thousand turtles evaluated since the beginning of the study showed good health and nutrition, which confirms the quality of the company's industrial effluent, the only spot where this species of turtle is captured and studied in the State.
Caiman Project
Developed by Instituto Marcos Daniel, and supported by ArcelorMittal Tubarão, this project promotes research and conservation of the Yellow-crested Jacare (Caiman latirostris) in Espírito Santo state. An emblematic species of the Atlantic Forest, this animal is a key element to keep the health and balance of the ecosystems in which they are inserted. The activities, carried out in the lagoon region within the company's Green Belt and in other areas of the State, include species monitoring, development of studies, environmental education for communities, and training of young researchers.
